Canopy Shawls Measuring Guide (Draped Canopy Decor)

canopy shawl is a decorative linen drape that creates a soft “wave” effect across the top of your canopy bed. This guide explains how to measure the total shawl length for your frame.

If you’d like us to confirm sizing and calculate the price, send your measurements and include your country + postal code.

What you’ll need

  • Measuring tape

  • Notes app / paper

  • Step stool (if needed)

  • (Optional) A photo of your canopy bed from the front

Before you measure

  • Measure in cm or inches — keep it consistent.

  • Measure the canopy frame, not the mattress.

  • Decide your style:

    • Soft wave in the middle (most popular), and/or

    • Extra drop / pooling on the floor on both sides.

Step 1 — Measure these 3 points

You’ll measure:

  1. Left side height (L)
From the top canopy frame down to where you want the shawl to reach on the left.

  2. Top width (W)
Across the top frame from left to right.

  3. Right side height (R)
From the top canopy frame down to where you want the shawl to reach on the right.

✅ INSERT SCHEMA #1 — Canopy Shawl: measure left height + top width + right height

Canopy shawl measuring diagram showing three measurements—left side height, top width, and right side height—used to calculate total shawl length, with added allowance for a soft wave and optional extra drop on both sides.

Step 2 — Add extra fabric (wave + floor fall + optional cross styling)

A) Drape allowance (for the soft wave in the middle)

Recommended drape allowance: 30–50 cm (12–20")

This extra length creates the relaxed “wave” dip in the middle of the shawl.

B) If you want the shawl to fall lower / pool on the floor

If you want the shawl to drop down on both sides and reach the floor (or pool), you must add extra length for both sides.

✅ Important: this floor fall allowance is added twice, because the shawl has two sides.

Formula:
Desired floor fall on ONE side × 2

Example:
If you want it to pool by 20 cm (8") on each side:
➡️ 20 cm × 2 = 40 cm (8" × 2 = 16")
This ensures the drop is similar on both canopy sides.

C) Optional: crossing / layering the shawls on top (stronger “X” wave)

If you plan to cross the shawls over the top (or layer multiple shawls), you may need additional length so the top doesn’t look tight.

✅ Recommendation:
Tell us your styling goal (light cross vs dramatic cross), and we’ll advise the extra allowance based on your canopy size.

Step 3 — Calculate shawl length

Shawl length = L + W + R + drape allowance + floor fall allowance (+ optional cross allowance)

Where:

  • L = left side height

  • W = top width

  • R = right side height

  • Drape allowance = 30–50 cm (12–20")

  • Floor fall allowance = (desired fall on one side × 2)

  • Cross allowance = optional (if crossing/layering)

Common mistakes (Canopy Shawls)

  • Not adding drape allowance (shawl looks tight/flat)

  • Measuring the mattress instead of the canopy frame

  • Measuring only the top width (missing side drops)

  • Mixing cm and inches

  • Wanting it to fall/pool on the floor, but not adding floor fall ×2

  • Planning a crossed top look but not mentioning it (may need extra fabric)
