What you’ll need

• Measuring tape
• Notes app
• Your mattress measurements
• Mattress topper measurements (if you use one)

Before you measure

• Measure the mattress, not an old sheet.
• If you use a topper, include it in the depth measurement.
• Measure in centimeters or inches — just be consistent.

Measure width

Measure mattress width from edge to edge.

Measure length

Measure mattress length from top to bottom.

Measure depth (important for fitted sheets)

Measure mattress depth/height (thickness from top surface to bottom).
If you have a topper, measure the total height mattress + topper.

Choose your sheet type

• Fitted sheet: needs width + length + depth
• Flat sheet: needs mattress size + your preferred overhang/drop

Flat sheet — choose your preferred overhang

Decide how much you want the sheet to hang over the sides and foot of the bed (more overhang = more tuck-in room and a softer drape).
