How to Care for Linen | Washing, Drying & Storage Guide

Learning how to care for linen properly will help your home textiles stay soft, fresh, and beautiful for years to come. Linen is an easy-care fabric that can be maintained at home with little effort — and it becomes even softer with every wash. All of our products are made from the highest quality 100% linen, and we would like to share some key information to help you keep your linen products in great condition for years.

Linen is a truly special fabric. It keeps you cool in summer and gently wraps you in warmth during winter. But that is not all. Its list of unique qualities is long: linen is naturally hypoallergenic, breathable, skin-friendly, durable, and sustainable. It is also fully biodegradable, antistatic, and antibacterial. There are so many reasons to take proper care of it and enjoy it for many years.

PREPARATION

We recommend washing linen separately from other fabrics and sorting colors carefully, without mixing whites with darker or colored items. When washing bed linen, turn it inside out and fasten all buttons before placing it in the washing machine.

WASHING

Linen can be hand-washed or machine-washed using a gentle cycle. It is important not to overload the machine, so the fabric can move freely in the drum. Do not wring or twist linen, as this may cause it to lose its original shape. Linen naturally becomes softer with every wash.

DETERGENTS

Use only mild detergents suitable for delicate fabrics. Strong detergents and bleach can weaken linen fibers and may discolor the fabric. We also do not recommend using liquid fabric softeners, as they are designed mainly for synthetic fabrics rather than natural ones. These products can coat the fibers and reduce linen’s natural absorbency.

DRYING

After washing, gently shake out the fabric and hang it while it is still damp. If possible, dry your linen outdoors. During drying, the fabric develops its natural airy texture. Avoid over-drying, as this can make the fibers more brittle and more prone to damage.

TUMBLE DRYER

Stonewashed linen products may be tumble dried, but extra care is needed, as machine drying may cause shrinkage. Always use a delicate drying cycle. For best results, remove the products while they are still slightly damp. Tumble drying can make the fabric feel especially soft and airy, but it is important to remember that frequent machine drying may shorten the lifespan of linen fibers.

IRONING

Linen wrinkles naturally — that is part of its beauty and charm. Stonewashed linen has a soft, airy texture, so we generally do not recommend ironing our products. However, if needed, and if you prefer a smoother, more polished look, use a high heat setting and iron the fabric while it is still slightly damp.

TEMPERATURE

Linen should be washed in cool or warm water. We recommend washing at 30°C, with a maximum temperature of 40°C. Higher temperatures may cause linen to shrink by as much as 10%, so it is very important to follow the recommended washing temperature.

SHRINKAGE AND DURABILITY

During production, linen is pre-washed, softened, and pre-shrunk. When cared for properly, its natural shrinkage should not exceed approximately 3%. For bedding, especially sheets, we recommend rotating between several sets to extend their lifespan.

Linen should not be stored under heavy pressure. When keeping it in a closet, make sure it has enough air circulation.
